Description

The 1930s book of Japanese Family Designs – Heianmonkan (平安紋鑑) consists of the designs of the Heian Nobility mon or family crests’ and the historical processes shaped by the Samurai class.
During the Heian period (794–1185), the nobily first used the mon as decoration on their ox drawn carts, later the Samurai adopted and adapted them as their family crests.
The Heianmonkan (平安紋鑑) was made available in the United States by the Boston Book and Art Shop (located at 472 Boylston Street, Boston) starting around 1935. This edition is one of that period with its bound and silk front and back covering.
The book was published and produced in Japan, is in fairly good condition considering its age and usage, There is discoloration and foxing in some pages. The silk covering is discolored, shows signs of age and some loss on the back or front (depending where one starts to read).
I have not counted the pages but none are missing and there are around 200 pages some with parchment paper in between pages. The book’s only English page is the title page and photographed, everything else is in Japanese.
