1980 Cuban vintage silkscreen poster for the animated movie from Juan Padron  “Elpidio Valdes y el Fusil” designed by Bachs for ICAIC.  The short propaganda movie is about an  imaginary story of a Mambi (Cuban revolutionary during the War of Indepence in late 1800s) that is armed with a musket, instead of a rifle, and is the hero of a battle for using the musket.

Eduardo Muñoz Bachs ( 1937 Valencia, Spain – 2001 Havana) at a young age his family immigrated in 1941.  Bachs produced more than 2000 posters for the ICAIC which produced and promoted Cuban films. Titled  “dibujo animado cubano de Juan Padron -ELPIDIO VALDES Y EL FUSIL”  Bachs /80

Condition: Side edges minor wrinkles; top edge a smudge upper left; small tear mid-right.  Acid free tape used on corners for prevention.  The image has not been affected by such.  Image in Very Good condition.

Measurements: Silkscreen -20 inches wide x 30 inches high ; Image – 18 inches wide x 28 inches high.

Most of the highly collectible Cuban posters are from mid-1960s through early 1980s, the period called “el periodo de oro de la grafica cubana” (golden period of Cuban graphics). These silkscreens were develop with new graphic techniques, due in part that materials were not readily available and lack of formal graphic schools. The Cuban posters became known for the use of bold innovate images which were mostly for proganda. Among the most important were the movie posters of the ICAIC which would promote the national movie industry as well as foreign films.
