“Sea Gate New York Harbor” Silkscreen by Marie MacPherson 1940s New York

Description

Sea Gate is neighborhood at the end of Coney Island in Brooklyn and has been around since the 1890s. It juts into Gravesend Bay in the New York Harbor.  This silkscreen depicts the Harbor looking from the shores of Sea Gate showing a peaceful idyllic view with a steam ship in the distance. Probably printed in the latter part of 1940s.  Titled “Sea Gate New York Harbor” and numbered #34/50 in pencil.  Marie R. Macpherson signed in the original engraving.  Very Good condition with some age discoloration to the paper measuring 13 inches  x  19 inches.

Marie R. MacPherson ( b.1877 (79)- d.1964 ),  studied at The Art Academy of Cincinnati becoming a landscape and portrait painter.  Early in her career MacPherson had worked for well know Ohio potteries, Weller and Rookwood, as an art pottery decorator.  In the mid 1930s, she started creating serigraphs and prints.  After her husband’s death, she moved to New York City in 1941 to further her artistic endeavors,
