Lovely blue and white 1950s Japanese ceramic Hibachi with underglaze hand painted decoration of cranes, pine trees and mountains. The design is of 2 cranes with red tuft of head feathers, perched on the trunk of a pine tree while another crane is in flight. Symbolism of Cranes – fidelity, longevity and good fortune while the Pine Tree’s meaning is strength. Mountains which are sacred in Japan are the quest for beauty and perfection.
A Hibachi is an earthenware brazier in which charcoal is burned to provide indoor heating. Before WWII, hibachis were common in Japanese homes but now they are usually seen in some traditional ceremonies and festivals. Nowadays they can be use as large incense burners, jardinieres, planters or even fish bowls.
