Description
Agustin Fernandez, born in Havana, Cuba in 1928, attended famed San Alejandro art school in Havana at the age of 15. His early painting were mostly figurative and realistic. His formative years were spent in Paris where he started to paint in black, white and earth tones which later evolved into more dark, somber color palette still using warm earth tones.
Because of his association with Robert Mapplethorpe, Fernandez’s 1970s and later works are called erotic by some but they are more spatial or other worldly with a human feel. Heavy and mesmerizing shapes take a life of their own in his canvases of the period.
Agustin died in New York City in 2006.
